Culture Futures event to coincide with RIO+20

In connection with the RIO+20 Conference in Brazil Culture Futures held a successful conference June 17th 2012 with speakers including top names such as the Nobel Prize winner and Protector of Culture Futures Rajendra Parchauri, Founder of the Ecological Sequestration Trust CBE Peter Head and the Chinese journalist and award-winning filmmaker John D. Liu.

The RIO+20 conference honoured the 20th anniversary of the historic 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The Culture Futures event held to draw attention to the role of the cultural sector in achieving greater sustainability.

Culture|Futures Forum at APAP Conference in New York 6th January

Culture|Futures and Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) organized a Culture|Futures Forum as a pre-conference 6th January during the 2012 APAP world conference. The full APAP conference took place in New York at the Hilton Hotel from 6th – 10th January and had 4000 arts presenters attending. The Culture|Futures Forum took place Friday 6th January 9 – 12 and 1-3 in the Mercury Ballroom.

The program included introductions and closing by Terre Jones, CEO Wolf Trap Centre for Performing Arts and Olaf Gerlach-Hansen, Director CultureFutures. Key notes on the Ecological Age by Peter Head, Chair Ecological Sequestration Trust and on Cities Preparing by NYC Deputy Director for Long Term Planning  and Sustainability, Adam Freedman.

Creative cases on working with ecology shared by artists Cynthia Hopkins, Mary Miss and the Civilians. A session on financing and funding featured Raj Patel of Arup, who  addressed how cultural venues can save money and go green,Peter West of the National Science Foundation and James Lochner of NASA addressed how their foundation/agency work with art presenters on developing new work, followed by a break out sessions and a closing session addressing next steps.

Eco-Leadership through Culture

Dec 5th, City Council Chambers, Durban

Culture|Futures organised the conference “Eco-Leadership through Culture”  December 5th from 9.30 to 19.00 during the UN Climate Summit COP17 in South Africa. The conference was co-organized with the Municipality of Ethekwini (Durban), the Ecological Sequestration Trust and the Danish Cultural Institute in co-operation with many other partners in Durban and worldwide.

The conference took place at the Durban Municipal City Chambers located at The City Hall, 263 Dr Pixley KaSeme Str (West Str), 1st Floor Council Chambers, Durban. The program featured key notes and panel-interventions from some of the world’s highly recognised specialists and activists in solutions needed to solve the challenges of the World and Africa.

Key notes included Peter Head, one of the world leaders in integrated urban sustainable development and chair of the new Ecological Sequestration Trust, and Prof. Edgar Pieterse, director of the Africa Centre for Cities. They presented global and the African perspective to address major global and African challenges for urban/regional development and discuss the significant role of culture.

EcoAçãoCultural Seminar, 25-26th of November 2011

As a result of the Culture|Futures Conference in Sao Paulo May 30th 2011, the following key Sao Paulo institutions; British Council, Centro Cultural da Espanha, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Crie Futuros, Instituto Cultural da Dinamarca, Instituto Cultural Italiano, Instituto Goethe, Virada Sustentável, Serviço Social da Indústria (SESI), Universidade Aberta do Meio Ambiente e da Cultura da Paz (UMAPAZ) have united a group called EcoAçãoCultural, which joined forces the 25-26 of November to discuss sustainability. The seminar dealt with the questions of how the institutions can implement sustainability in their own daily work and how they approach culture, artistic and social work in a sustainable way.

The themes discussed at the seminar:

  • The way we live

  • The right ways of organizing a sustainable platform

  • Cultural/Creative economy

  • Creative networking and art production

The seminar included speakers from Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Germany and United Kingdom.

Culture|Futures conference in Milan, Italy: Oct 19, 2011

The amazing Palazzo Marino in Milan was October 19th 2011 the setting for another international Culture|Futures conference, which in Milan was organised by Ragnarock Association in cooperation with the City of Milano and other partners.

The conference discussed the role that Scandinavian and Italian actors in the creative industry have in reaching an ecological age that is the Culture|Futures vision for 2050.

The conference was also focusing on the way design, food, fashion and innovation can guide people towards more sustainable standards of living in the next few years.

To speak at the conference, Culture|Futures and Ragnarock had invited several guests from the sector to talk about how they connect creativity and sustainability, the guest-list included among many others Kigge Hvid (CEO of INDEX), Francesco Paulo Zurlo (Vice director of INDACO) and Guizy Bettoni (Director of CLASS).
